Additional Location Photos and RMLS Compliance: What Oregon Agents Should Know

RE PIXS is now OREA approved, and we’re using that education to help agents market listings more confidently.

Additional location photos can be a great way to tell a fuller story around a listing.
They can show nearby parks, trails, streetscapes, schools, views, community features, or other area highlights that help buyers understand what surrounds a property. When used well, these images can add helpful context and make a listing feel more complete.
But they also need to be handled carefully.
As listing media becomes more detailed, agents need to understand how RMLS rules apply not only to property photos, but also to additional location images, neighborhood photos, drone media, virtual staging, and other visual marketing pieces connected to the listing.
Why Additional Location Photos Matter
A strong listing should help buyers understand more than just the rooms inside the home.
Additional location photos can help show:
● Nearby parks and public amenities
● Trail access or outdoor recreation
● Street views and neighborhood feel
● Local scenery or views
● Community features that help explain the setting
● Property surroundings that are hard to show from standard listing photos
These images can be valuable, especially when location is a major part of the property’s appeal. The key is making sure the images support the listing without creating compliance concerns.
Where Agents Can Run Into Issues
Additional location photos can become tricky when they include things that are not allowed or may be interpreted as promotional, misleading, or non-compliant.
Common issues can include:
● Visible business names or logos
● Private business storefronts
● People in the photo
● License plates or personal identifying details
● Copyrighted signs, murals, or artwork
● Promotional text or graphics
● Images that could create a Fair Housing concern
● Edits that misrepresent the property or surrounding area
A photo may seem harmless at first glance, but small details in the background can matter.
For example, showing the general feel of a walkable neighborhood may be useful. Clearly featuring a specific private restaurant, coffee shop, gym, or storefront may create a problem.
The goal is to give buyers helpful context without turning listing media into advertising for another private business.

Public Amenities vs. Private Businesses
One of the simplest ways to think about additional location photos is this: Public amenities are generally easier to use than private businesses.
Public amenities may include parks, public trails, public roads, schools, transit stops, hospitals, and other broadly accessible community features. These can help buyers understand the surrounding area without promoting a private company.
Private businesses are different.
If a photo clearly shows a business name, logo, storefront, sign, or other identifying branding, it may not be appropriate for MLS use.
That does not mean agents can never show neighborhood character. It just means the media should be created thoughtfully, with angles and compositions that focus on the area rather than specific private businesses.
